PTERO is technology developed by Electron Flight to provide seamless transitions between vertical hover and horizontal cruise flight without requiring the complex mechanical actuators traditionally required by tiltrotor systems.

Core Concept

  • The airframe and rotors are passively positioned by differential thrust, gravity and relative wind. No servos, tilt mechanisms or control surfaces required.
  • It eliminates the need for servos, active tilt mechanisms, or control surfaces, resulting in an extremely simple and low-parts-count design.
  • By varying thrust across multiple rotors and relying on natural forces (gravity pulling components into position and airflow during flight), the system operates without powered actuators.

PTERO (Passive Tilt Electric Rotor) technology enables seamless transitions between vertical hover and forward flight by using differential thrust, gravity, and airflow to passively orient the rotors and airframe, eliminating the need for servos, active tilt mechanisms, or control surfaces. This creates a mechanically simple, low-parts-count system that functions essentially like a multirotor embedded within a fixed-wing aircraft.
